Social Media Influencers Fueling Unofficial Trade for Unapproved Slimming Drug

A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on messaging platforms, based on recent findings.

Investigational Treatment Gaining Popularity Via Social Media

Retatrutide, which is still in clinical trials, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed weight-reducing properties. Followers are encouraged to message these profiles privately for source information, while also obtaining promotional offers.

Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms

Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of members share “before and after” images, injection guides and assertions of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to other platforms for purchases.

Learning About The Experimental Drug

Retatrutide is an investigational injection developed by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies suggest it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being promoted digitally as the successor to Ozempic.

Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries

However, physicians and chemists have warned that the sale of what is still an unapproved drug in the United Kingdom is worrisome and could lead to individuals injecting products of uncertain source.

Some professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be linked to the rising cost of approved weight loss treatments such as Mounjaro.

Regulatory Position and Enforcement

Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed medication that cannot be promoted or distributed for human use under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.

Several content creators try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a restricted substance, but promotion and distribution can still breach medicines, advertising, and customer laws, risking penalties, legal action or prison.

Service Response and Content Removal

Based on TikTok, the platform has removed problematic content and banned associated keywords and search suggestions. The organization said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and investing in enhancing enforcement strategies.

Digital Trading Activities

Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand participants marketing retatrutide using the platform's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately brings up groups with numerous of members, populated with images of weight loss, glowing testimonials and step-by-step guides for mixing or injecting at home.

Within moments of entering one group, a vendor shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an instruction manual and guaranteed delivery within two days. When questioned whether the substance was authentic, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.

Product Information and Pricing

Within these communities, messages show black plastic packages with postal service stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”

Buyers can select between powder vials, prepared at home with purified liquid, or pre-filled injectors usually priced at £160 for 20 milligrams. When questioned how much time a injector should last, vendors give contradictory responses ranging from a few weeks to “depends on your body”.

Service Oversight and Security Measures

A representative for Telegram said it actively moderated harmful content on its platform including material that promoted the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.

Medical Expert Cautions

“Individuals are administering substances they cannot confirm. Even if the research behind this drug is sound, these digital versions may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the director of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.

A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in demand to current price rises for approved weight-loss medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using social media. But counterfeit injections are highly risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the environment they were made in was sterile,” she said.

Her team has already encountered patients harmed by self-injection from unverified suppliers. “We recognize the disappointment, but purchasing from Telegram or WhatsApp is gambling with your well-being,” said the doctor. “These materials could be impure or improperly measured.”

Producer Statement

A representative from the pharmaceutical company said the substance was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can market [it] for personal consumption,” they said, noting that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a Lilly investigational product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially significant medical dangers”.
